MERU NATIONAL PARK
Meru National Park is located in East-north-east of Mount Kenya in Meru District of Eastern Province, and it covers 870km2. It is wild and beautiful. It forms part of a larger wilderness area along the Tana River, including Bisanadi and Mwingi National Reserves, Kora national park and Rahole national reserve. It has diverse scenery from woodlands at 3,000 feet on the slopes of Nyambeni Mountain Range.
There is reasonable rainfall in the western half of the park because of its proximity to Mount Kenya and the Nyambene Hills (which reach to 2515 meters. However, the eastern portion it is generally dryand can be extremely hot. The wetter north-western sector is hilly, with rich volcanic soils. Many permanent streams cross the Park, and three large rivers straddle the reserve: the Tana to the south, the Ura to the south-west and the Rojeweru to the east. There are several prominent inselbergs of basement rock, notably Mughwango and Leopard rock.
Game include; Baboons, Buffalos Bushbucks, Duikers, Elands, Elephants, Gazelles, Genets, Gerenuks; Giraffes, Hartebeests, Hippos, Hyenas, Hyraxs, Impalas Jackals, Kudus, Lions, Mongooses, Vervet Monkeys, Oribis, Oryxs, Steinboks; Sunis, Warthogs Waterbucks, Zebras, wild dogs, aardwolves, bushbabies, Caracals; Cheetahs, Civets, Dik-diks Leopards, Otters, Pangolins, Bush Pigs, Porcupines, Ratels, Reedbuck,, Black and white rhino, Servals, Shrews and Squirrels.
Over 400 bird species have been recorded including the Pel's Fishing Owl, kingfishers, rollers, bee-eaters, starlings and numerous weavers.
Other attractions in the park include; Former home of Joy and George Adamson and Elsa the lioness and the Adamson’s falls.
Most of the park is covered by bush, thornbush and wooded grassland of varying densities with Combretum prevailing in the north and Commiphora in the south. In the extreme north there is a small remnant outliner of rain forest, the Ngaia forest.
Accommodation includes; one lodge and two tented camps which are planned inside the Park and also there are eight special campsites.
