TSAVO WEST NATIONAL PARK
Tsavo West National Park located about 200 km south-east of Nairobi, is a 9,000 sq km game park in southern Kenya. This is approximately 30% of Kenya's area under parks. It contains a diversity of habitats, wildlife and a mountainous scenic landscape.
It is part of the entire Tsavo eco-system. Tsavo was gazetted as Kenya's second national park in 1948, tsetse flies and lack of water kept this great tract of land from being inhabited by humans. The North Eastern boundary along the Highway adjoins Tsavo East National Park, but Tsavo West has a more varied topography and a more diverse array of habitats. Its temperature ranges from 20 - 30o C and rainfall from 200mm - 700mm.there are mainly two rain seasons: Long rains - March/April and Short rains - November/December.
Almost all the northern sector is Acacia commiphora bush land with scattered trees such as baobabs – Adansonia and Delonix elata. A range of craggy hills reaches around 1800m and is heavily wooded in the Ngulia area, the southern sector consists of open grassy plains.
Mzima Springs, with its unique underwater hippo is the most famous. It is replenished with two hundred and twenty million liters of crystal-clear water every day, from the underground streams. This water comes from the lava massif known as the Chyulu Hills, which is 40-50 kilometers away. Mzima forms a rich wildlife pageant with elephant soaking half in the waters, hippos, tip-toeing across the bottom, crocodiles resting on the bank or swimming through the water; gazelles, zebra and giraffe moving around the banks through the thick acacias and raffia palms and hundreds of chattering monkeys and birds. Other game in the park include;  fringed-eared Oryx, the gerenuk, lesser kudu, lions , hyenas, leopards, cheetahs and caracal.
There are about 600 bird species that have been recorded. Mzima is also the main source of Mombasa’s water supply

It is a very good park for visitors who enjoy walking, offering a number of nature trails and the opportunity to explore the Chaimu volcanic crater. There is a platform for observation and an underwater glass tank, which provides a special vantage point to view this remarkable place. The magnificence Ngulia is found not far from Mzima Springs, along a well-marked track.
There are numerous accommodation options in the park including Finch Hattons Camp; one of Kenya's best luxury tented camps, built around a series of hippo pools, Kilaguni which stands at the canter of Tsavo West and affords excellent game runs in all directions. This lodge and its waterhole have almost permanent population of ground squirrels, warthog, hyrax, mongooses and masses of impudent birds. Other lodges include; Ngulia Lodge and Severin Safari Camp/Lodge. There are also other facilities like campsites, Bandas, and picnic sites.
